Gucci Cosmos Carousel Illustration Project
2023
CLIENT: GUCCI | AGENCY: HARD FEELINGS STUDIO
The Gucci Inspiration Gallery is a carousel-like installation showcasing a dazzling array of iconic Gucci looks worn by actors, singers, and celebrities. It was part of the 2023 exhibition Gucci Cosmos held at the West Bund Art Center in Shanghai.
This installation captures the essence of life and existence, celebrating the richness of all forms and fantasies. In front of the carousel stands a series of beautiful illustrations created through an “exquisite corpse”-style collaborative process.
I was honored to contribute two unique illustrations centered around the theme of “Metascopic.” Inspired by the cosmos, celestial bodies, and extraterrestrial life, I created these two artworks to explore perspectives beyond the human realm.
Both of my compositions adopt a centrally symmetrical layout, reminiscent of celestial charts. The first piece explores “Metascopic” perspectives through the contrast between subjective and objective viewpoints. On the right, the Yellow Emperor—representing the subjective world—emerges from a swirl of abstract gases into solid form. On the left, Saturn, symbolizing the objective universe, appears enveloped in a nebula. The surrounding elements spiral counterclockwise, all being drawn into a black hole at the center.
The second piece conveys the idea of dimensional convergence and mutual observation. At the heart of the image is our familiar Earth, while much of the surrounding space is populated with bizarre, alien life forms. Both realms coexist objectively, yet they may remain unaware of each other’s presence.
